Chapter 15

Dean

Bash is about to run through some numbers on expenses that he thinks Royal can cut down on, such as the Web Design Department, when a red-faced Connor barges into my office looking like he’s about to murder someone. When his eyes land on the Ice Queen herself, you don’t have to be an Einstein to figure out who his murdering instinct has been inspired by.

“You fired Lloyd?!” he roars, gaining an audience from outside the room. Sebastian must read my mind, as he places his tablet on the coffee table and calmly walks behind our enraged friend to close the view for the small gawking crowd pretending to work, but in reality, hanging on every syllable Con will spout out next.

“I did,” Devina answers coolly, observing her manicured nails as if Con’s reaction is of no importance.

“Why the hell did you do that? What did the poor schmuck ever do to you?” he spits out, his fists gripped at his side, and his chest rising and falling with every erratic intake of breath.

Devina rolls her eyes and turns her chair to face the beast before her. Any other woman would be intimidated by the sight of such an aggressive, unhinged man, foaming at the mouth, with thoughts of wringing her little neck as the only thing that would satisfy his rage. Devina, though, just looks plainly bored. I force myself to clear my throat, instead of the chuckle that threatens to come out. I straighten my back and control my features, letting these two fools get their foreplay on and over with.

“It’s not what he did to me, Connor, it’s what he did to others in a lower position than him on a daily basis. I always found his performance less than stellar, but you always seemed to think otherwise, so I overlooked it, letting you take the lead. But some things cannot be overlooked. I fired said schmuck, as you called him, as I wasn’t pleased with his sexist tone and repulsive behavior. Edie’s new assistant, Tatiana, was disgusted with the things he said to her when she went to your department to hand over some files yesterday. The fool was under the illusion she was a temp and thought his actions wouldn’t get back to his superiors. He was wrong. After careful due diligence, I found out his remarks and grabby hands were well known in the office, and I will not condone that type of behavior. Nor should you have, for that matter.” Devina states coldly, daggers in her eyes as if Connor was the culprit for Lloyd being a douchebag.

If I’d known I had such a man employed at Royal, I’d have fired him myself and would have had security roughen him up a bit when showing him the door. Con should be relieved, in my view. Devina did him a solid.

“First of all, Devina,
